Description

A comforting, plant-based twist on a classic schnitzel, made with extra firm tofu for a satisfying and savory meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 14 ounces extra firm tofu (pressed for at least 15 minutes)
  • 1/2 cup water or vegetable stock
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 1/2 teaspoon poultry seasoning (or concentrated bouillon)
  • 1/2 cup non-dairy milk (almond or soy recommended)
  • 4 tablespoons flour (all-purpose or chickpea flour for gluten-free)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning (or all-purpose seasoning)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (or panko for extra crunch)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. Press tofu wrapped in a dish towel under a heavy skillet for at least 15 minutes to remove excess moisture.
  2. Slice tofu into 1/2 inch thick pieces. In a bowl, combine water (or stock), garlic powder, soy sauce, and poultry seasoning; marinate the tofu slices for at least 15 minutes.
  3. Whisk together non-dairy milk and flour in one bowl. In another bowl, mix breadcrumbs, onion powder, garlic powder, poultry seasoning, salt, and black pepper.
  4. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Remove marinated tofu slices, dip in flour mixture, then coat with breadcrumbs.
  5. Fry coated tofu slices for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.

Notes

Ensure tofu is well-pressed for best results. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
