Description
A rich and flavorful vegan BBQ sauce that’s quick and easy to prepare, perfect for summer cookouts or any grilled dish.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup organic ketchup
- 4 tablespoons maple syrup
- 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari
- 2 tablespoons molasses
- 1 tablespoon vegan Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon liquid smoke
- 1.5 teaspoons smoked paprika
- 1.5 teaspoons chili powder
- 0.75 teaspoon black pepper
- 0.25 teaspoon onion powder
- 0.25 teaspoon garlic powder
- 0.125 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
- 1.5 tablespoons arrowroot powder (or cornstarch)
- 3 tablespoons cold water
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine all the ingredients: ketchup, maple syrup, apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, molasses, Worcestershire sauce, liquid smoke, spices, arrowroot powder, and cold water. Whisk everything together until it’s a silky smooth blend.
- Pour the mixture into a small frying pan and turn the heat to medium-low. Let it simmer gently for about 3 to 5 minutes, stirring often.
- Once it’s done simmering, remove it from the heat and let it cool for a bit before transferring it to an airtight jar.
- If your BBQ sauce isn’t thick enough after refrigerating, combine the arrowroot powder and cold water separately until smooth, then whisk it into the simmering sauce.
- If planning to use it with BBQ tempeh, simmer the sauce for just 1 to 2 minutes to coat.
Notes
Always taste your sauce while making it and adjust spices according to preference. This sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2-3 months.
